Our decarbonisation roadmap
As the first major heat treatment company to set a science-based carbon reduction target, we are committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% by 2030 (compared to 2019 levels), in line with a 1.5oC trajectory. As of 2024, we have achieved a 29% reduction – putting us more than halfway towards our goal.
To ensure continued progress, our decarbonisation roadmap focuses on three core priorities where we are taking proactive steps as a business:
- Efficiency: By optimising furnace management, introducing advanced cooling systems, and improving building energy use, we have reduced our energy intensity by 27% since 2019.
- Electrification: We are increasing the share of electricity in our operations by introducing electric furnaces, on-site renewables and sustainable energy procurement. Today, around 45% of our processes are powered by electricity.
- Evolution: We are advancing to lower-impact furnace technologies, switching to lower impact process gases, and investing in innovative solutions such as additive manufacturing.
Alongside reductions in our own operational emissions, we are targeting reductions in our Scope 3 emissions. Our goals, aligned to SBTi methodologies, include a 45% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy-related activities by 2030 (vs 2019), as well as encouraging at least 30% of our suppliers to set science-based targets by the same year.
